Easy Foam  ::  Taking The Heat And High Cost Out Of Fin Fan Cooler Cleaning!
Just as the majority of all fin fan cooler manufacturers recommend foam cleaning, they are nearly unanimous, when it comes to discouraging high pressure and plain water fin fan cooler cleaning, because it is mostly ineffective. They also discourage these other methods, because high pressure cleaning of any kind, tends to:
SEVERELY DAMAGE NUMEROUS COOLER FINS AND PUSHES DIRT AND DEBRIS BACK INTO THE COOLER PACKS.
Foam Cleaning Compared To Soda Blasting

Soda Blasting with a sodium bicarbonate media, is an effective manual solution to remove scaled on contaminates such as calcium carbonate (caused by applying water to coolers to assist in the cooling process).  However, since it is a mechanical method, it does not clean all of the fin and tube surfaces and cannot contact the tops of the tubes and areas where the media cannot reach with enough velocity as to remove any contaminates, such as the upper tubes due to the offset stacking of the tubes within the cooler.

Soda blasting also leaves a very dusty residue that then needs to be removed, along with pushing dirt and debris back into the cooler packs.  Just starting the fan to blow it out does not remove the reside effectively.  Water rinsing alone does not remove all of the residue either.  If soda blasting has to be used to remove hard deposits, it should be followed by foam cleaning to thoroughly remove all of the sodium bicarbonate reside.

Foam Cleaning Compared To Ice Blasting

Ice blasting is basically the same manual method as soda blasting, with just a different media.  It is not very effective, much like soda blasting.  Although there is no residue since the “ice” melts away, there is not very much liquid volume that is generated to carry away the dirt and debris.  Ice blasting is also very expensive and is often times, cost prohibitive to use.

Foam Cleaning Compared To High Pressure Water Rinsing

First, you should NEVER use high pressure water rinsing, of any kind, to clean fin fan coolers.  It tends to cause severe damage to the delicate fins on the cooler tubes.  Once these fins are bent over, especially on the lower fins, air flow is greatly reduced.  This causes the coolers to not get the airflow required and will not perform as designed.

Foam Cleaning Compared To Low Pressure Water Rinsing

Using this method to rinse the fins of your fin fan coolers, the dirt and debris just moves around within the cooler packs and forms into “mud cakes” that harden when they dry, causing even more restriction in the air passages needed for cooling.

Attempting to clean fin fan coolers with water only, as described in the above two methods, are not very effective methods. One main reason is that Foam Cleaning has additives and chelating ingredients that make the dirt and debris “slick”, therefore not allowing them to bind together.  This allows them to move freely through the fins and then are rinsed from the cooler.  Other reasons are that only the large particles of dirt are removed and the remaining dirt prevents coolers from operating at their peak efficiency and acts as a magnet, causing the coolers to become dirty again, very quickly.
Other Definitive Reasons The Above Methods Are Discouraged

Real World Examples of Water Rinsing Versus Using a Cleaning Agent

All of the above scenarios work the same as your fin fan cooler packs.  You would not wash your car, laundry or yourself without using some type of cleaning agent!  The reason high quality cleaning agents work so well, is that there are active ingredients within cleaning agents.  One of the vital ones is surfactants.  Surfactants break the surface tension, allowing the water to penetrate and remove the dirt and debris.

These are examples of real world cleaning that we take for granted everyday.  Can you picture the differences?
